The pattern is worth naming plainly. The chairs quoting the biggest numbers publish the least about themselves, and the chair publishing the most — seat width, seat length, bar length, required hanging height — quotes the lowest number of the group. Your limit is the hardware, not the chair
A chair rated at 500 lb hanging from a ceiling hook rated at 200 lb is a 200 lb setup. This is the single most important sentence on the page. A hammock chair loads one anchor point with your full body weight plus whatever dynamic load you add by sitting down heavily or swinging — and a chair is worse than a hammock here, because a hammock splits the load between two anchors and a chair does not.
- Into a joist, never into drywall or a plasterboard anchor. Find the joist, drill a pilot hole, and use a lag-screw eye bolt sized for the load.
- Check the hook, the carabiner, the chain and the spring separately. The chain sold with a chair is frequently the weakest link in the set.
- A swivel or spring adds dynamic load. It makes the chair nicer to sit in and it makes the peak force higher.
- Outdoors, the branch is the anchor. Use a live horizontal limb at least as thick as your thigh, with a wide strap rather than rope — see are hammocks bad for trees?

If you are using a stand
Most chair stands top out at 330 lb, which is below every 500 lb chair on this page. The FDW is the exception we track at 400 lb, and it is the reason it is listed here alongside the chairs. If you want more than that, the answer is a ceiling or beam anchor into structure rather than a floor stand — there is nothing in the chair stand category rated to 500 lb.
Seat size matters as much as capacity
Capacity tells you the chair will not fail. Seat width tells you whether it is comfortable.
