Rope hammocks move air through the weave, which makes them the better choice in heat, and they leave marks on bare skin. Fabric hammocks are smooth and warmer, and quilted ones are padded. In wet climates, synthetic versions of either beat cotton versions of both.

Climate decides it
In a hot, humid climate, rope is the right answer and it is not close. Lying on a solid fabric bed in 95°F humidity means lying on something that traps every bit of your body heat against you. The open weave of a rope hammock is doing real work.
In a temperate or cool climate, the calculation flips. The airflow that rescues you in August makes you cold in October, and a quilted fabric hammock's batting is insulation you would otherwise have to add.
Material beats weave for weather
A cotton rope hammock and a cotton Brazilian hammock have the same weather problem: cotton absorbs water, stretches and can mildew. A synthetic rope hammock and a polyester quilted hammock both handle exposure far better — polyester in particular resists mold, moisture and fading.

What about gathered-end fabric hammocks?
Fabric splits into two very different sub-families, and lumping them together is where most comparisons go wrong. Quilted fabric hammocks have spreader bars, lie flat and are heavy. Gathered-end fabric hammocks — Brazilian, Mayan and camping nylon — have no bars, hang in a curve, and are far more stable.
If the thing you dislike about fabric hammocks is the flatness and the tipping, you may be objecting to spreader bars rather than to fabric.
Stand requirements differ
Rope hammocks are long and rigid — 13 feet is common, and extension chains add more. They need a long stand. Gathered-end fabric hammocks need less length and more height. Quilted hammocks need length equal to their overall dimension. See the stand size guide.
Common questions
What type of hammock is most comfortable?
In heat, rope — the airflow matters more than anything else. In mild or cool weather, quilted fabric is the most padded and flattest. For sleeping, a gathered-end fabric hammock on the diagonal beats both.
Do rope hammocks leave marks on your skin?
Yes, on bare skin, and that is inherent to an open weave. A thin sheet or a towel solves it completely without losing much airflow.
Which lasts longer, rope or fabric?

Are rope hammocks less stable?
Rope hammocks almost always have spreader bars, and spreader bars raise your center of gravity, which makes any hammock easier to tip out of. That is a spreader-bar property rather than a rope property.
