The four questions that decide which stand you need
- How long is your hammock, including its chains? That is the minimum stand length. A 13-foot rope hammock does not fit a 9-foot frame.
- Does your hammock have spreader bars? Spreader-bar hammocks need length; gathered-end hammocks need height and a bit more span. See are hammock stands universal?
- How much weight, with margin? Add both people, then add margin for the force of dropping into the hammock.
- Is the ground flat? If not, a fixed-leg frame will rock, and you want an adjustable stand.

Material: what actually survives outside

Universal does not mean every hammock
A universal stand is one with adjustable hanging points that accommodates a range of hammock lengths and both spreader-bar and gathered-end styles. Are hammock stands universal?

How long should a hammock stand be?
At least as long as the hammock's overall length including chains, for a spreader-bar hammock. Gathered-end hammocks are more forgiving on length but need enough height to keep the bed off the ground under load. The stand size guide has the table.
Can a hammock stand be left outside in winter?
Powder-coated and stainless steel frames resist rust and humidity well. Even so, the 2026 durability research recommends storing gear indoors during heavy snow and extended wet seasons. A stand that disassembles in 15 minutes is much more likely to actually get stored.
Do I need a stand if I have trees?
