Synthetic hammocks left outdoors do fine; cotton ones do not. Polyester and nylon resist moisture and dry quickly, and polyester is not prone to mold or fading. Cotton absorbs water, stretches and can mildew. No hammock is immune to heavy snow or an extended wet season.

What the material research actually says

The realistic outdoor setup
If you want a hammock that lives outside with the least fuss, the combination is a synthetic bed on a powder-coated steel frame, sited where it gets some shade in the afternoon and where water drains away from the feet of the stand. That is it. Everything else — covers, sprays, seasonal routines — is optional maintenance that extends the life rather than enabling it.
If you want a cotton rope hammock anyway, and plenty of people do because nothing else feels the same, hang it somewhere covered and accept that you will bring it in. What kills outdoor hammocks
- Storing a quilted hammock damp. The batting holds water for far longer than the surface suggests.
- Leaving bare steel hardware in contact with wet fabric. That is where the rust stain starts.
- Ignoring UV. Fading is cosmetic; the fiber embrittlement underneath is not.
- Snow load. A hammock full of wet snow is a static load the rating never contemplated.
- Wind on an empty hammock, which flogs the fabric against the hardware for hours at a time.

Can you leave a hammock outside all year?

Can rope hammocks get wet?
Synthetic rope such as DURACORD is marketed specifically to withstand sun and rain. Cotton rope can get wet but should not stay wet — it absorbs water, stretches under load while damp, and can mildew. Dry a cotton rope hammock before it goes back into storage.
Will a steel hammock stand rust outside?
Powder-coated and stainless steel frames resist rust and humidity well, according to the SUNCREAT durability guide. Bare or lightly-coated steel will rust at any point where the coating is chipped, which is usually the joints and the feet. Check those spots each season.
Does a hammock cover help?
A cover keeps sun and rain off, which addresses the two things that do most of the damage. It is not a substitute for drying a wet hammock, because a cover over damp fabric traps the moisture instead of removing it.
