Width is a tree-protection requirement, not a comfort feature
Straps should be at least one inch wide. Thin rope cuts into bark and over time can girdle and kill a tree, which is why a growing number of state and national parks now require tree-protection straps of a minimum width. This is the practical reason not to hang a hammock on paracord, regardless of what the paracord is rated to.
Loop the strap around the trunk at roughly 4 to 5 feet off the ground and let the webbing lie flat against the bark. More on the tree side in are hammocks bad for trees?

Daisy chains are the sensible default. Cord systems are noticeably better once you care about dialing the hang angle in precisely, which mostly means people who sleep in a hammock regularly rather than lounge in one.
How long do straps need to be?
Long enough to wrap the trunk and still reach the hammock. On a mature tree, 8 feet disappears fast — which is why the 8 ft 1 in Helios and 8 ft 4 in Hummingbird straps can be limiting despite being excellent products. The 10-foot options handle thicker trunks without drama.

Common questions
How long should hammock straps be?
Ten feet handles most trunks comfortably. Eight-foot straps work on slimmer trees and run short on mature ones, since the wrap eats length before anything reaches the hammock. The Kammok Python 10 at 10 ft 2.5 in and the Grand Trunk at 10 ft are the longest in the 2026 test we cite.
How wide should hammock straps be?
At least one inch. Narrower webbing and rope concentrate load into the bark and can girdle a tree over time, and a growing number of parks now require a minimum strap width for exactly that reason.
How much weight can hammock straps hold?
Published combined capacities in the 2026 test we cite run from 300 lb (ENO Helios) to 500 lb (Kammok Python 10), with 400 lb typical. That is often lower than the hammock's rating, which makes the straps your real limit.
Can I use rope instead of straps?
You can tie a hammock with rope, and you should not hang it from bare rope against a tree. Rope cuts into bark and can kill the tree, and many sites prohibit it. Use wide webbing against the trunk, with rope or a whoopie sling only between the strap and the hammock.
Do I need straps if I use a stand?
No — a stand has its own hanging points. You need whatever suspension connects your hammock's ends to those points, usually carabiners. Straps are specifically for trees.
