Width is a tree-protection requirement, not a comfort feature
Straps should be at least one inch wide. Thin rope cuts into bark and over time can girdle and kill a tree, which is why a growing number of state and national parks now require tree-protection straps of a minimum width. This is the practical reason not to hang a hammock on paracord, regardless of what the paracord is rated to.

Daisy chains are the sensible default. Cord systems are noticeably better once you care about dialing the hang angle in precisely, which mostly means people who sleep in a hammock regularly rather than lounge in one.
How long do straps need to be?

Do I need straps if I use a stand?
No — a stand has its own hanging points. You need whatever suspension connects your hammock's ends to those points, usually carabiners. Straps are specifically for trees.
