How Long Should Hammock Straps Be?

Nine to ten feet per strap is the answer almost every maker has settled on. What varies, and what actually matters, is how many attachment points you get along the way.

ENO Atlas Hammock Suspension System

Nine to ten feet per strap covers nearly every tree you will meet, which is why the market has converged there: the ENO Atlas is 9 ft, the Grand Trunk Trunk Straps 10 ft, the Kammok Python 10 is 10 ft 2.5 in. Extra length widens the range of trees you can use; it does not improve the hang. Attachment-point count does that.

Part of our guides hub. The question usually arrives in disguise. People ask about strap length when what they actually want is to stop fighting the sag, and the spec that fixes that is the number of loops along the webbing, not the total length. Both numbers are below.

What length actually buys you

Candidate trees. A strap has to go round the trunk and still reach back to the hammock, so trunk circumference eats length before anything else does. A 10 ft strap round a thick trunk leaves you roughly 7 ft to work with; an 8 ft strap round the same trunk leaves roughly 5 ft. On a crowded site, that difference decides whether a pair of trees is usable at all.

What it does not buy is a better lay. Beyond the length needed to reach, extra webbing is extra weight and extra slack to manage. That is why the Hummingbird straps at 8 ft 4 in and 1.55 oz are a legitimate ultralight choice despite being the shortest here — they trade tree options for ounces, deliberately. The ultralight end of the category is covered on best ultralight hammock straps.

Attachment points are the spec that matters

Each loop along the webbing is a discrete choice of hang angle. With 20 of them, as on the Python 10, you can find the right sag by moving one loop. With one, as on the Hummingbird, you set the angle by where you wrap the trunk — which works, but takes practice and a willingness to re-wrap. The Helios takes a third approach, replacing loops with a Microtune cord adjustment for continuous rather than stepped control.

The target you are adjusting toward is a suspension angle of roughly 30 degrees from horizontal with the loaded seat 16 to 19 in off the ground. Loops are how you hit it quickly. A structural ridgeline is how you stop having to: DutchWare's published rule of thumb puts the ridgeline at about 83% of the hammock's length, and once it is set the sag no longer depends on the strap position at all.

Width, because length is not the only dimension

Wide webbing spreads load across bark instead of concentrating it, which is why makers supply webbing rather than cord for the part that touches the tree — Hennessy, for instance, includes 42 in Tree Hugger webbing even on hammocks whose suspension is rope. Many parks that allow hammocks specify a minimum webbing width for the same reason, so a thin strap can mean not hanging at all. The ecology is on are hammocks bad for trees.

How to choose in one line

  • Default: ENO Atlas — 9 ft, 400 lb, 9 oz, 15 points. Enough of everything.
  • If capacity is the constraint: Kammok Python 10 — 500 lb, and it is both longer and lighter than the Atlas.
  • If you want maximum tree options cheaply: Grand Trunk Trunk Straps — 10 ft, 18 points, at 12 oz.
  • If grams matter more than trees: Hummingbird at 1.55 oz, accepting one attachment point and 8 ft 4 in.
  • If you want stepless adjustment: ENO Helios, accepting a published 300 lb.

Common questions

How long should hammock straps be?

Nine to ten feet each. The ENO Atlas is 9 ft, the Grand Trunk Trunk Straps 10 ft and the Kammok Python 10 is 10 ft 2.5 in — that range covers almost any tree once trunk circumference is accounted for.

Are longer hammock straps better?

They give you more usable trees, not a better hang. Past the length needed to reach, extra webbing is extra weight and extra slack. Adjustment quality comes from the number of attachment points instead.

How many attachment points do I need?

More is easier. The Kammok Python 10 publishes 20, the Grand Trunk 18 and the ENO Atlas 15; each loop is a discrete hang angle. Single-loop ultralight straps work but require you to set the angle by where you wrap.

Can I use rope instead of straps?

Not against bark. Thin line concentrates load on the cambium, and many parks set a minimum webbing width. Use wide webbing round the trunk even when the suspension itself is rope.

What angle should the straps hang at?

Roughly 30 degrees from horizontal, with the loaded seat 16 to 19 in off the ground. That is both the comfortable hang and the one that keeps tension at the anchors closest to your actual weight.
