A double hammock is a width measurement, not a capacity rating. Some doubles are rated 600 lb and genuinely fit two adults; others are rated 275 lb and are a wide hammock for one. Always read the published capacity, and in a set, read the set's rating rather than the hammock's.

Double means wide. It does not mean two-person
Compare the Amazon Basics double, rated 450 lb and explicitly described as holding two people, with the Algoma 6291WL — also a quilted double — rated at 275 lb because it is sold with an 11-foot stand. Both are doubles. Only one is a two-person setup.
In camping hammocks the word is used differently again. An ENO DoubleNest is called a double because of its width, and most experienced users treat it as a spacious one-person hammock. Two adults in a gathered-end double is legal but rarely comfortable for a whole night, because you end up rolled into the center together.

Spreader bar or gathered end for two?
For two people sitting together, a spreader-bar double is the more comfortable arrangement: the bed stays flat, so you are not pressed into each other. For two people lying down, a gathered-end double is more secure but less pleasant, because the curve pulls both bodies to the center line.
Honest summary: two adults in one hammock works well for an hour in the afternoon and poorly for a night's sleep. If the goal is sleeping, two hammocks is a better answer than one bigger hammock — and the camping hammocks cluster is where to look.

How much weight can a double hammock hold?

Can two people sleep in a double hammock?

Is a double hammock better for one person?
