A quilted hammock is two layers of fabric with batting between them, held open by spreader bars. It is the flattest and most padded hammock style, needs no pad or pillow, and holds water in the batting — so it must be dried before storage.

Bed dimensions, compared properly
Overall length is the number on the box; bed dimensions are the number that matters. Two quilted hammocks with the same overall length can differ by four inches of usable bed, and four inches is the difference between comfortable and cramped for a tall person.

What quilting actually buys you
- No rope marks. The reason a lot of people move to quilted after owning a rope hammock.
- No pad needed in cool weather. The batting is insulation, which a rope or Brazilian hammock does not have.
- A flat, bed-like surface that is easy to sit on sideways and easy to get out of.
- A detachable pillow on most models, which sounds trivial and is not — a loose cushion ends up on the grass.

The stand problem

Are quilted hammocks comfortable?
They are the most padded and flattest-lying hammock style, and they need no separate pad or pillow. The trade is stability — spreader bars make a hammock easier to get into and easier to tip out of than a gathered-end design.
Can a quilted hammock stay outside?
