How to Choose a Hammock
Five questions, asked in the right order, take you from every hammock on the market to a shortlist of two.

Ask in this order: where will it hang, what will it hang from, how will you use it, who will be in it, and does it stay outside? The first two eliminate most of the market before comfort or style enters the conversation.

Question 1: where will it hang?
Measure before you shop. If you have trees, measure the distance between them — 12 to 17 feet is the workable range. If you do not, measure the flat area available for a stand. A 9-foot stand wants about 10 feet of clear ground; a 15-foot stand wants 16.
This single measurement eliminates more products than anything else you will do.
Question 2: what will it hang from?

Question 3: how will you use it?
- Sitting and reading on a porch → a spreader-bar hammock. Easy entry, flat bed, comfortable sideways.
- Napping in a garden → quilted or rope, depending on your climate.

Question 4: who will be in it?
One person or two changes the capacity requirement and often the style. Two adults want a published rating of 450 lb or better, and honestly want a spreader-bar hammock for sitting together rather than a gathered-end one, which pulls both bodies to the center line.

Question 5: does it stay outside?
If yes, buy synthetic. Polyester and nylon resist moisture and dry quickly; cotton absorbs, stretches and can mildew. If you are happy to bring it in, cotton is softer and more pleasant and you should buy it. This is a genuine preference, not a right answer — see can you leave a hammock outside?

Common questions
How do you choose a good hammock?
Start with where it will hang and what it will hang from, then how you will use it, who will be in it, and whether it stays outside. Those five questions narrow the market faster than any comparison of models.
How long should a hammock be?
For lounging, roughly two feet longer than your height is comfortable, which puts most adults at 12 to 13 feet. For sleeping, longer is better because it lets you lie flatter across the diagonal. Check your span and stand length first.
What type of hammock is most comfortable?
In heat, a rope or Mayan weave for the airflow. In mild weather, a quilted hammock for the padding. For sleeping, a long gathered-end hammock used on the diagonal. Comfort is more about how you hang it than which one you buy.
Should I buy a hammock and stand together?
If you do not already own either, yes. A set is matched at the factory, so the fit problem disappears and it usually costs less than the two halves separately. See hammocks with stands.
Is a double hammock worth it for one person?
Often, yes. The extra width lets a single person lie across the diagonal, which is the flattest and most comfortable position in any gathered-end hammock.
