Where to Buy a Hammock
Five channels sell hammocks and they are not interchangeable. Which one you use decides your selection, your return window and whether anyone will tell you the capacity.

Knot & Nap is reader-supported. We earn from qualifying purchases as an Amazon Associate, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide what gets recommended — here is how we pick.

Buy mass-market hammocks and complete sets online, where the selection and the published specifications are best. Buy cottage and made-to-order gear direct from the maker and expect a lead time. Use an outdoor shop when you want to sit in one first, and a big-box store only in season, for a cheap set you can carry home.

- Zinc-coated steel frame
- 9 ft stand

What it does well
- Named best bang for the buck by Bob Vila and overall pick by CNN Underscored in 2026
- Tool-free assembly in about 15 minutes
- Zinc coating resists rust better than bare steel
Where it falls short
- Cotton bed should not live outdoors year round
- A 9 ft frame locks you out of longer hammocks if you upgrade the bed later

4. Classic rope comfort
Pawleys Island Original Deluxe Cotton Rope Hammock
The reference cotton rope hammock: soft, wide, American-made, and the one every other rope hammock gets measured against.
Specifications
- 450 lb capacity
- 13 ft long, 55 in wide bed
- Seats two
- Handcrafted in the USA
- Ships with extension chains and tree hooks
Source: Pawleys Island product listing (pawleysislandhammocks.com), 2026. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.
What it does well
- Cotton rope is the softest surface in the category and breathes in heat
- Extension chains included, so a tree hang needs no extra hardware
- 450 lb rating covers two adults comfortably
Where it falls short
- Cotton absorbs water, stretches when wet and can mildew if left out
- Needs a 15 ft stand or a wide tree span once the chains are on

5. Premium handwoven
Yellow Leaf Hammocks Signature Classic Double Hammock
The premium handwoven pick in this category — a 10 by 6 foot acrylic bed woven by hand in northern Thailand, and the size most buyers should start with.
Specifications
- 10 ft long, 6 ft wide bed
- 400 lb capacity on the product listing; the brand's own size-guide page says 330 lb for this size
- Fits 1-2 people
- Weathersafe acrylic Performance Yarn, described as a triple weave of over 150,000 loops
- Handwoven by Mlabri artisans in northern Thailand
- Ships with a canvas tote and a hanging guide
- Hand wash cold with mild detergent, hang spread out to dry, never tumble dry
Source: Yellow Leaf Hammocks product and size-guide pages plus the Amazon listing, 2026; positioning from Forbes Vetted and Taste of Home 2026. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.
What it does well
- Named best backyard hammock by Forbes Vetted and best premium by Taste of Home in 2026
- Handwoven rather than machine-sewn, and signed by the artisan who wove it
- Acrylic yarn is weather-tolerant, so it does not have to come in every night like cotton
- A 6 ft bed width is generous for sitting, which is how backyard hammocks actually get used
Where it falls short
- No hanging hardware and no stand in the box — budget for straps or a stand on top
- The brand publishes two different capacities for this size, 400 lb and 330 lb, and does not reconcile them
- Fine yarn loops catch on zippers, watch straps and rings
- Costs several times what a quilted budget set costs, and that gap buys craft rather than specification

What it does well
- A complete shelter in one purchase — net, fly, ropes and tree straps are all in the bag
- The asymmetric cut and structural ridgeline reproduce the same lay every pitch
- The most widely stocked Hennessy, so accessories list a fit for it
Where it falls short
- OutdoorGearLab found the suspension needs knot tying and was the most time-consuming system they set up
- OutdoorGearLab also calls the included rainfly small and notes no stakes or guy lines are supplied
- The bug net is sewn in, so you carry it on nights you do not need it

Online marketplaces: the default, with caveats
For a mass-market hammock this is simply the best channel. It is where the heritage rope makers, the camping brands and the artisan weavers all list side by side, which means it is the only place you can compare a 13-foot cotton rope hammock against a 19-ounce nylon one without opening five tabs. Nearly every pick on this site is available this way, and it is where our own buy links go.
Two things to watch. The first is lookalike listings: an unbranded hammock with a 500 lb claim, a stock photo and no published dimensions is not the same product as a rated one from a named maker, however similar the thumbnail looks. The second is variant drift, where choosing a different color or size quietly moves you onto a different listing with different specs. Confirm the length, the width and the capacity on the variant you are actually adding to the cart.
Direct from the maker: the only route to some gear
Cottage brands are small makers who sell almost entirely from their own sites, and for a lot of serious hammock gear there is no other channel. Hennessy publishes its whole range direct, with a height limit and a weight limit on every model — the detail behind our Hennessy hammock review. Warbonnet, DutchWare and Hammock Gear sell quilts, tarps and suspension you will not find elsewhere, and heritage rope makers like Pawleys Island sell direct alongside their marketplace listings.
The trade is time and flexibility. Hammock Gear publishes its lead times plainly: 20 business days on custom-made items and 1 to 2 business days on in-stock ones, and it points out that paying for expedited shipping does not shorten the build. Warbonnet posts lead times on each product page, gives stock items a 30-day return window, and refunds custom items at 80 percent — a 20 percent restocking fee — within the same 30 days. None of that is unreasonable for made-to-order gear, but it is worth knowing before you order a custom quilt three days before a trip.
- Buy direct when the options matter. Fabric weight, length, color and suspension choices usually exist only on the maker's own configurator.
- Buy direct when the brand is cottage. Warbonnet, DutchWare, Hammock Gear, Hummingbird and Onewind are direct-first businesses; what appears elsewhere is a fraction of the range.
- Check the lead time before the sale, not after. A posted build time of several weeks is normal and is not a delay.
- Read the custom-order clause. A restocking fee on a made-to-order item is standard; a free return is not.
Outdoor specialty shops: for the decisions you cannot make on a screen
An outdoor shop carries camping hammocks, straps, tarps and bug nets, and almost never carries rope or spreader-bar hammocks. What it gives you is the thing no listing can: hanging one up and getting in it. Fabric feel, how a double width actually lays and whether a sewn-in bug net bothers you are all decided in about ninety seconds in person and never satisfactorily online.
The co-op model also buys you the longest return window in this list — REI's published policy runs a year for members and 90 days for non-members, with some category exceptions. If you are not sure a hammock is for you at all, that is a meaningful difference from a marketplace return window measured in weeks. Prices are usually list, so you are paying for the trial and the advice.
Big-box and warehouse stores: a seasonal channel
From spring through late summer, general retailers and warehouse clubs stock cheap complete sets — a quilted or cotton bed with a steel stand in one box — and they are genuinely good value for a yard that just needs something to lie in. You can also put it in the car today, which matters more than buyers admit. After the season ends the category largely vanishes until the following spring.
The weakness is information. Shelf tags and seasonal listings often give you a photo, a color and little else, and the questions that decide whether a hammock works — the stand span, the bed length, the published capacity — go unanswered. If the box does not state a weight limit, do not assume one. Our hammock stand size guide and hammock stand weight limits pages exist largely because this channel leaves those figures out, and the best hammocks with stands covers the sets whose numbers are published.
Secondhand: cheap, with one real risk
Local listings and auction sites are the cheapest way into a hammock, and for a steel stand they are a reasonable bet — a frame either is bent or is not, and you can see it. The fabric is the problem. Ultraviolet light degrades hammock fabric and rope steadily and invisibly, so a hammock that spent three summers hanging outside can look fine and have lost a serious fraction of its strength. There is no way to inspect for it and no return if you are wrong. Our how long does a hammock last? page covers what actually ages, and can you leave a hammock outside? covers why the sun does the damage.
Five things to confirm before you pay, anywhere
- The published weight limit, and whether it is per person or total. A 450 lb figure for two adults is not the same claim as 450 lb each.
- The length and the bed width. Length decides your span and your lie; width decides whether sitting in it is comfortable. See how to choose a hammock.
- Whether suspension is in the box. Most camping hammocks are sold without straps. Where you are hanging from trees, the webbing is not optional — see the best hammocks for trees.
- The stand span, if you are buying a stand. A 9-foot frame will not take a 13-foot rope hammock, and that mismatch is the most common return in the category.
- The return window and who pays the postage. It varies from a few weeks to a year by channel, and it is the only protection you have against a hammock that does not fit you.
When to buy
Hammocks are a spring and summer retail category. Selection peaks from roughly April through August, which is also when the seasonal channels exist at all; the trade-off is that peak selection is rarely peak discount. Late-season clearance is the cheapest time to buy a stand or a complete set, because the physical stores want the floor space back. Direct and online channels run all year, so an off-season purchase is perfectly possible — you are simply choosing from the permanent range rather than the seasonal one.
Where we would buy, by what you want
- A hammock and stand together for the yard: online, for a set with published dimensions and a published capacity.
- A camping hammock: online for the best price, or an outdoor shop if you want to lie in it first.
- A custom quilt, tarp or cottage-brand hammock: direct from the maker, lead time accepted.
- An American rope hammock: either the maker or a marketplace listing — both carry them, and the specs are published in both places.
- An artisan Mayan or Brazilian weave: online from a named seller, so the weave and the dimensions are described rather than implied. Background in Mayan hammocks and Brazilian hammocks.
- The absolute minimum spend: secondhand for a stand, new for anything load-bearing and made of fabric.
Common questions
Where is the best place to buy a hammock?
Online, for most people — the selection is the widest and the published specifications are the most complete. Buy direct from the maker for cottage and custom gear, and use an outdoor shop when you want to try a hammock before committing.
Is it cheaper to buy a hammock online or in store?
Usually online, except at late-season clearance, when physical stores discount seasonal stock to clear floor space. Outdoor specialty shops tend to sell at list price and charge you for the advice and the trial.
Should I buy a hammock direct from the brand?
Yes for cottage brands and custom items, because that is often the only channel and the full option list lives there. Expect a build time: Hammock Gear publishes 20 business days on custom-made items and 1 to 2 business days on in-stock ones.
Can you return a hammock?
It depends entirely on the channel. REI's published window is a year for members and 90 days for non-members; Warbonnet gives stock items 30 days and refunds custom items at 80 percent within the same period; marketplace windows are usually measured in weeks. Confirm it before you pay.
Do stores sell hammocks in winter?
Rarely. General retailers treat hammocks as a spring and summer category and clear the stock at the end of the season. Online sellers and the makers themselves ship year-round.
Is it safe to buy a used hammock?
A steel stand is a reasonable used purchase because damage is visible. Fabric and rope are not: ultraviolet light weakens both invisibly, so a used hammock of unknown history can look perfect and no longer hold its rating.
What should I check before buying a hammock?
The published weight limit and whether it is per person or total, the length and bed width, whether straps are included, the stand span if you are buying a frame, and the return window. Any listing that publishes none of those is telling you something.
