Where to Buy a Hammock Stand
A stand is the heaviest, bulkiest, most returnable thing in this hobby, and the channel you buy it from decides whether the span is published, who carries it inside, and what happens if it does not fit your hammock.

Buy a backyard steel or wooden stand online, where the span and the capacity are published and the frame ships to your door. Buy a portable camping stand direct from ENO or Kammok, or from an outdoor shop. Use a home-improvement or general retailer when you want to carry one home today, and accept that the shelf will tell you very little.
Part of our guides hub. This is the stand half of a question we answered for hammocks in where to buy a hammock, and it is genuinely a different answer. A hammock is light, soft and forgiving about where it came from. A stand is 30 to 70 lb of steel or wood, it has one dimension that has to match your hammock exactly, and returning it means getting it back in the box.

Before the channel: the one number that decides everything
Almost every bad hammock-stand purchase is the same mistake. Someone buys a 9 ft frame for a 13 ft cotton rope hammock, or a 15 ft arc for a 9 ft nylon camping hammock, and discovers it on assembly day. The length of the stand, not the brand on it, is the specification that decides whether the thing works, and it is the specification the thinnest sales channels leave off.
So the ranking below is really a ranking of how likely a channel is to tell you the span, the capacity and the footprint before you pay. Our hammock stand size guide has the matching table, hammock stand weight limits covers the capacity side, and are hammock stands universal? answers the question most listings dodge.

What it does well
- Six adjustment points set up level on ground where a fixed frame will not
- 15 lb is light enough to actually carry to the site
Where it falls short
- 300 lb is the lowest capacity of any stand here — one person only
- Adjustability costs setup time compared with a fixed frame
No licensed photograph of this product is available to us yet.
6. Wooden, stationary
Petra Leisure Wooden Hammock Stand
A wooden stationary frame — the option when the stand has to look like furniture rather than scaffolding.
Specifications
- 450 lb capacity
- 14 ft wooden arc frame
- Teak stain finish
- Stationary
Source: Better Home Guides, with capacity and span from the retail listing. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.
What it does well
- Reads as furniture in a planted yard
- Stationary frames are stable
- A 14 ft arc takes the long rope hammocks a 9 ft frame cannot
Where it falls short
- Wood needs sealing and does not want a wet winter
- A 14 ft arc needs real space and is not moving once built

The five channels, and what each is for
| Channel | Best for | Published specs | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online marketplaces | Backyard steel and wooden frames, complete sets | Usually span, capacity and material; sometimes not the footprint | Unbranded frames with a capacity claim and no dimensions |
| Direct from the maker | Portable camping stands and chair stands | The most complete: weight, capacity, compatibility, carry bag | A narrow range, and full price |
| Home-improvement and general retailers | Carrying one home today, in season | Thin: a photo, a material, often no span | Seasonal stock, and the box in your own car |
| Outdoor specialty shops | Seeing a portable stand set up before buying | Good on camping stands, nothing on backyard frames | Carries almost no steel backyard stands at all |
| Secondhand and local listings | Spending the least on a steel frame | None; you are inspecting rather than reading | Missing hardware and bent tubing |
Online marketplaces: the default for a backyard frame
If the stand is going to live in a yard, on a deck or in a room, this is the channel. It is the only one that carries the whole category at once: universal steel frames, 15 ft arcs for long rope hammocks, wooden stands that read as furniture, hammock-and-stand sets in one box, chair stands, and the hitch-mounted frames nobody else sells. It is also where our own buy links go.
The reason it wins on a stand is boring and decisive: the listing has room for a spec table. The Sunnydaze universal frame publishes a 550 lb rating; the Vivere set publishes 450 lb across both halves and a 9 ft frame; the Petra Leisure wooden arc publishes 450 lb and 14 ft. Those are the three numbers you need, and they are on the page.
- Read the span, not the hammock in the photo. A staged photo tells you nothing about what fits. Our best hammock stands roundup lists the published span for every pick.
- Treat an unpublished capacity as unknown. Two of the budget frames we have researched do not publish one anywhere, and we say so on the card rather than filling in a category average.
- Check the shipping weight before you click. A steel 9-footer is a long, heavy box, and it is one of the few things in this hobby where return postage genuinely matters.
- Buy the set if you do not already own a hammock. A matched hammock-and-stand set removes the span question entirely. Best hammocks with stands covers that market.
Direct from the maker: the only good route to a portable stand
Portable camping stands are a different product from backyard frames, and they are a direct-sales business. ENO publishes six stands on its own range page — the Parklite chair stand, the Nomad, the Parkway adjustable, the SoloPod, the SoloPod XL and the ENOpod — plus hammock-and-stand bundles, and it states that its portable models are all-weather lightweight aluminum with no-tools setup and a carry bag included. Kammok sells its Swiftlet the same way, and publishes a 300 lb limit, a packed weight, and a list of the hammocks it fits.
That compatibility list is the thing you are buying. A portable stand is a narrow frame carrying a gathered-end hammock at a specific height, and the maker is the only party who will tell you in writing which of its own hammocks the frame is rated for. A marketplace listing for the same stand usually will not. If the stand is going camping, to a festival or to a beach, read the maker's page first and then buy wherever is cheapest.
Our portable hammock stands roundup covers this end of the market, camping hammock stands covers the use case, and hammock stands for ENO is the page to read if you already own a DoubleNest.
Home-improvement and general retailers: the today channel
Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Target and Wayfair all run dedicated hammock-stand categories, and Lowe's goes as far as giving metal frames their own filtered aisle. In spring and summer the physical stores also put complete sets on the floor, which is the one thing no online channel can match: you can put a stand in the car and be lying in it the same afternoon.
The weakness is information density. A shelf tag has room for a material, a color and a price, and the span — the number that decides whether your hammock fits — is frequently absent. The same is true of seasonal online listings at these retailers, which are often thinner than the marketplace listing for the identical frame. If the box does not state a length and a weight limit, assume neither, and measure your hammock before you leave the house.
One genuinely useful thing about this channel in November: it is the clearance channel. Stands are a spring and summer category, and a physical store wants the floor space back. Late-season is the cheapest time to buy a steel frame or a complete set, and the trade is that you choose from whatever is left rather than from the range. If the plan is to leave the hammock on the frame rather than carry it in and out, add a cover at the same time — the best hammock sleeves ranks them.
Outdoor specialty shops: good for camping stands, useless for backyard frames
REI lists hammock stands and stocks the ENO SoloPod, and an outdoor shop is the one place you can see a portable stand assembled before paying for it. Setup time, how heavy 15 to 18 lb of aluminum actually feels when carried, and whether a narrow frame feels stable under you are all decided in about two minutes in person and never satisfactorily from a spec sheet.
What this channel does not have is the backyard category. Steel 9-footers, 15 ft arcs, wooden frames and hammock-and-stand sets are patio furniture, not outdoor gear, and an outdoor shop carries essentially none of them. If you came in wanting a frame for a cotton rope hammock, you are in the wrong store.
Secondhand: the one category where used is genuinely sensible
We are cautious about secondhand hammocks, because ultraviolet light degrades fabric invisibly and there is no way to inspect for it — the argument in how long does a hammock last?. A steel stand is the opposite case. It is either bent or it is not, the welds are either cracked or they are not, and you can see both in daylight. A used powder-coated frame with surface rust at the feet and all its hardware is a sound buy.
- Count the hardware before you load it. Missing bolts on a discontinued frame are the one failure you cannot fix from a hardware store.
- Sight down every tube. A frame that has been over-loaded bows at the middle, and a bowed stand is scrap.
- Check the feet. Rust at the ground contact is normal; rust that has eaten through the tube wall is not.
- Skip used wooden stands unless they are covered. Wood that has spent winters outside is a different proposition from steel, and steel vs wooden hammock stand explains why.
Four things to confirm before you pay, anywhere
- The stand length against your hammock length. A 9 ft frame takes roughly a 9 to 10 ft hammock; a 12 to 13 ft rope hammock needs a 15 ft frame once its chains are on. This single check prevents most returns in the category. See what size hammock do I need?.
- The published weight limit, and whether it covers two people. A 450 lb set rating is a total, not a per-person figure, and a frame that does not publish a figure at all should be treated as unrated.
- The footprint, not just the length. A 14 ft wooden arc needs real width around it as well as length, and a stand that fits your hammock can still not fit your deck. Best hammock stands for a patio covers the tight-space version.
- Assembly and the return route. Tool-free assembly in about fifteen minutes is the good end of this category; a wooden arc with hardware is an afternoon. Then ask who pays return postage on a 60 lb box, because that is the real cost of getting the span wrong.
Where we would buy, by what you want
- A frame for a hammock you already own: online, after checking the published span against your hammock. How to choose a hammock stand is the decision in full.
- A hammock and stand together: online, as a matched set, so the span question never arises.
- A stand for a long rope or spreader-bar hammock: online, from a listing that publishes a 14 or 15 ft length. Rope hammocks and spreader bar hammocks cover why those beds need the length.
- A portable stand for camping: the maker's own page for the compatibility list, then whichever channel is cheapest, or an outdoor shop if you want to set it up first.
- A stand that has to look like furniture: online, for a wooden arc with a published span and finish. Wooden hammock stands is the roundup.
- A stand for a hitch receiver or a truck bed: online only. Nothing else carries them. Best truck hitch hammock stands covers that niche.
- The absolute minimum spend: secondhand steel, locally, inspected in daylight with all its hardware counted.
When to buy
Selection peaks from roughly April through August, which is also the only window in which the physical stores carry the category at all. That is peak choice and rarely peak price. The marketplaces and the makers run year-round, so an off-season order is perfectly sensible — you are choosing from the permanent range instead of the seasonal one, and late autumn and winter are when the clearance frames appear. If you want a specific wooden arc or a particular portable model, buy it in season; if you want a steel frame and do not care which, wait for the floor space to become more valuable than the stock.
Common questions
Where is the best place to buy a hammock stand?
Online, for most people. It is the only channel carrying the whole category at once, and marketplace listings publish the span, the capacity and the material far more consistently than a shelf tag does. Buy portable camping stands direct from ENO or Kammok, where the compatibility list is published, and use a physical store when you want to carry one home the same day.
Do Walmart, Home Depot and Lowe's sell hammock stands?
Yes. Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Target and Wayfair all run dedicated hammock-stand categories, and Lowe's gives metal frames their own filtered aisle. In-store stock is seasonal and mostly spring and summer, and shelf information is usually thinner than the equivalent online listing, so measure your hammock before you go.
Can I buy a hammock stand near me?
In season, usually yes, from a home-improvement store, a general retailer or a garden center. Out of season the category largely disappears from physical shelves until spring. An outdoor specialty shop is a different case: it may stock a portable camping stand year-round but will almost never carry a steel backyard frame.
What size hammock stand do I need?
Match the stand length to the hammock length. A 9 ft frame suits roughly a 9 to 10 ft hammock, and a 12 to 13 ft rope or spreader-bar hammock needs a 14 or 15 ft frame once its chains are attached. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a stand goes back. Our hammock stand size guide has the full matching table.
Is it cheaper to buy a hammock and stand together?
Usually, and it is also safer. A matched set publishes one capacity figure across both halves and removes the span question entirely, which is why it is the pick we give most first-time buyers. The trade-off is that you are locked into that hammock, and a 9 ft set frame will not take a longer bed later.
Are hammock stands worth buying secondhand?
A steel frame, yes. Damage on steel is visible: bowed tubing, cracked welds, rust that has gone through the wall, missing hardware. All four are things you can check in daylight, which is not true of a used hammock, where ultraviolet damage to the fabric is invisible. Be more cautious with wooden stands that have wintered outside.
