For most backyards the right answer is a complete set: a hammock and a stand sold together, sized to each other, assembled in an afternoon. Buy the halves separately only if you already know your span and your capacity requirement.

Fabric is the decision, and it comes down to weather
Research into weatherproof hammocks is consistent on this point: polyester and nylon resist moisture and dry quickly, and polyester in particular is not prone to mold, moisture damage or fading. Cotton is the opposite — it absorbs water, takes a long time to dry, and can mildew. SUNCREAT's durability guide makes the same point about frames, noting that stainless and powder-coated steel resist rust and humidity well.

Sizing a backyard hammock when you have no trees
This is where backyard buyers lose money. A spreader-bar hammock is a fixed length and it does not compress — a 13-foot hammock will not fit a 9-foot stand, and no amount of adjusting will make it. Before you buy, measure the flat area you have and read the hammock stand size guide.

Capacity: check the set, not the hammock
The Amazon Basics set is rated to 450 lb and holds two people. The Algoma 6291WL set is rated to 275 lb. Both are quilted hammocks on steel frames. The difference is the frame, and it is the difference between a hammock two adults can share and one they cannot. Always read the rating on the thing you are actually buying.
Ground matters more than people expect
A stand on soft lawn will sink at the feet and rock under load. A stand on a slope will sit crooked no matter how you shim it. If your only flat ground is uneven or stony, look at hammock stands for uneven ground, where adjustable-leg designs solve a problem that fixed frames cannot.

- A cotton hammock if it will live outdoors uncovered. It is the single most common regret in this category.
- Any set rated under 300 lb if two adults will use it.
- A 9-foot stand if you have any intention of upgrading the hammock later — it locks you into short hammocks.

Common questions
Can I leave a backyard hammock outside all year?
Synthetic hammocks and powder-coated or stainless steel stands handle being outdoors far better than cotton and bare steel. Even so, 2026 weatherproof-hammock research is clear that weather-resistant does not mean indestructible — in heavy snow, strong wind or an extended wet season, store the hammock indoors when it is not in use. How much space do I need for a backyard hammock?
With trees, 12 to 17 feet between anchors covers most hammocks. With a stand, you need the stand's own footprint plus room to walk around it — a 9-foot stand wants about 10 feet of clear flat ground, a 15-foot stand about 16. See the hammock stand size guide.
Is a hammock with a stand better than hanging from trees?
A stand is more flexible and kinder to your trees, and it works in a yard that has no suitable anchors. Trees give a longer, more comfortable span and cost nothing if you already have them. If you use trees, use straps at least an inch wide — thin rope cuts into bark and can girdle a tree over time.
Do backyard hammocks come with everything I need?
