The Best Hammocks for an Apartment Balcony
A balcony gives you a rectangle you cannot change, a railing you are not allowed to drill, and a ceiling that may not legally be yours. Every pick here works inside those three limits.

The ENO SoloPod is the pick for a balcony: a freestanding stand rated 400 lb that ENO lists for tight spaces and uneven surfaces, on rubber feet that will not walk across decking. If your balcony is too narrow for any stand, hang a LA SIESTA Habana Comfort chair on a Sunnydaze C-stand instead — a C-frame carries its whole footprint on one side.
Part of our hammocks hub. A balcony is the hardest place on this site to hang a hammock, and it is hard for a reason that has nothing to do with hammocks: you almost certainly do not own the structure. Drilling a lag bolt into a concrete soffit or through a railing post is a lease violation in most buildings and a structural question in all of them, so the whole category reduces to freestanding gear and clamp-free hanging. That is the filter every pick below had to pass.

Measure three things before you shop
- The clear floor rectangle. Not the balcony's listed square footage — the usable rectangle left after the door swing, the air-conditioning condenser and whatever furniture stays. A 9 ft stand needs slightly more than 9 ft of straight line, and it needs it at floor level where the railing uprights are, not at waist height.
- The hanging height. For a chair this is the number that disqualifies most balconies. LA SIESTA publishes a required minimum hanging height of 6 ft 11 in for the Habana Comfort, which is more than many balcony soffits give you.
- What you are allowed to attach to. Read the lease. If the answer is nothing, you are buying a stand, and that is not a compromise — a stand is the only setup you can take with you when you move.
The published numbers, side by side
| Pick | Published capacity | Size / footprint | What it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| ENO SoloPod stand | 400 lb | Not published; ENO lists it for tight spaces | Floor space only, rubber feet |
| Vivere double cotton set | 450 lb | 9 ft stand | A clear 9 ft line at floor level |
| LA SIESTA Habana Comfort chair | 285 lb | Seat 3 ft 9 in wide, 5 ft 11 in long; total height 5 ft 3 in | 6 ft 11 in of hanging height |
| Sunnydaze steel C-stand | 300 lb | Not published on the listing we checked | Floor space on one side of the chair |
| ENO DoubleNest hammock | 400 lb | 114 x 76 in, 19 oz | A stand, or two anchors you are allowed to use |
| anymaka portable stand | Not published | Not published | Floor space; packs down for storage |
Two things fall out of that table. First, the chair route needs less floor and more ceiling, and the stand route needs the reverse — so whichever measurement is tightest on your balcony chooses the format for you. Second, published footprints are rare in this category. Where a maker does not publish one, assume the stand is longer than its nominal length, because the feet always stick out past the frame.

Why a stand wins on a rented balcony
A stand converts a structural problem into a shopping problem. There is nothing to drill, nothing to inspect, nothing to explain to a building manager, and nothing left behind when the lease ends. It also solves the thing people forget about balconies: a railing is usually around 3 ft 6 in tall, so a hammock hung from railing posts sits far too low and far too tight. A stand sets its own geometry and sets it correctly every time, which is the same argument the portable hammock stands page makes for camping.
The trade is floor area. A 9 ft frame will swallow a small balcony whole. If that is your situation, read down one format: a chair on a C-stand occupies roughly the footprint of an armchair, and the C-frame design means you can push it against the wall rather than centering it in the space.
The chair route, in detail
A hanging chair is the highest-density way to put a hammock on a balcony, and the Habana Comfort is the chair we point people at first because LA SIESTA publishes the three numbers that decide whether it will fit: seat width, total height and the required minimum hanging height. Most chairs publish none of them. The stainless swivel matters more on a balcony than anywhere else, too, because a balcony has walls on two or three sides and a chair that winds up on its own cords will eventually find one of them.
Hang it from a C-stand, not from the soffit. The Sunnydaze steel C-stand is powder-coated and listed for indoor or outdoor use, which is the right finish for a surface that gets rained on sideways. Note the honest mismatch: the stand publishes 300 lb and the chair publishes 285 lb, so the stand is the limiting part of that pair and the stand's rating is the one to respect. More on pairing the two on best hammock chair stands.
What does not work on a balcony
- Hanging from railing posts. They are designed for a sideways push, not a downward pull multiplied by a shallow hang angle. The rail is also too low to give the hammock any sag.
- Spreader-bar hammocks. A 13 ft rope hammock such as the Pawleys Island Original Deluxe wants a 15 ft stand once its chains are on. That is a backyard product — see spreader bar hammocks for where it does belong.
- Suction or clamp anchors. Nothing in our research publishes a capacity we would hang a person from.
- Cotton anything, uncovered. An exposed balcony is a weather site. Polyester and polypropylene survive it; cotton stretches and can mildew, as the leave-outside guide sets out.
Common questions
Can you put a hammock on an apartment balcony?
Yes, with a freestanding stand. That avoids attaching anything to a structure you do not own, which is the part most leases prohibit. A railing is not a hammock anchor — it is designed for a sideways push, not a multiplied downward pull.
What is the smallest hammock stand for a balcony?
The ENO SoloPod is the one ENO positions for tight spaces, rated 400 lb with rubber feet. For an even smaller footprint, a C-stand carrying a hanging chair takes roughly the floor area of an armchair, though it needs more height.
How much ceiling height does a hanging chair need?
LA SIESTA publishes a required minimum hanging height of 6 ft 11 in for the Habana Comfort. Measure your balcony soffit before buying a chair — this is the number that rules most balconies out.
Can you hang a hammock from a balcony railing?
We would not. Railings are engineered against a horizontal load, not a vertical one, and a hammock hung at the shallow angle a railing forces multiplies the force at each anchor well beyond body weight. Use a stand.
Will a hammock stand damage balcony decking?
Rubber feet are the thing to look for — the ENO SoloPod publishes them. Bare steel feet mark composite decking and can walk on a hard surface as the hammock swings.
