The Best Hammocks for a Porch
A porch gives you something a backyard does not: a roof. That single fact changes which materials are sensible and makes beam hanging the default rather than a project.

For a porch with a 15 ft span, the Pawleys Island Original Deluxe is the pick — 13 ft long, a 55 in cotton bed, 450 lb, and it ships with the extension chains and hooks a beam hang needs. For a short porch, hang a seat instead: the Sorbus macrame bench seats two at a published 450 lb, and the Sunnydaze Caribbean XL is the rope chair that handles weather.
Part of our hammocks hub. The reason a porch deserves its own page is the roof. A covered porch keeps direct rain and most ultraviolet off the hammock, which brings cotton back onto the table — and cotton is genuinely the nicest surface in this category. It also gives you structural timber overhead, so you are hanging from a beam rather than buying a frame. Both of those change the answer compared with backyard hammocks.

First question: do you have the span?
A full-length hammock is a long object. The Pawleys Island Original Deluxe is 13 ft of bed before the extension chains go on, and Pawleys notes it wants a 15 ft stand or a genuinely wide tree span once they do. The Hatteras Deluxe DuraCord is also 13 ft, at 60 in wide. If the posts on your porch are 10 ft apart, neither of those fits, and no amount of hardware will fix it.
So measure post to post first, then read the table. If the span is short, the format changes rather than the ambition: a hanging chair or a two-person swing bench needs one anchor point and about 4 ft of swing clearance, which almost every porch has.

What it does well
- Cotton rope is the softest surface in the category and breathes in heat
- Extension chains included, so a tree hang needs no extra hardware

2. A backyard hammock with room to spare
Hatteras Hammocks Deluxe DuraCord Rope Hammock, 13 ft x 60 in
Thirteen feet long and sixty inches wide — the published dimensions that make this the easiest backyard rope hammock to recommend to someone over six feet.
Specifications
- 13 ft long, 60 in wide
- 450 lb capacity
- Two-person
- DuraCord synthetic rope, described by Hatteras as the densest rope on the hammock market at 85 ft per lb
- Cumaru hardwood spreader bars, a full 1 in thick
- Zinc-plated hardware
- Handcrafted in the USA
Source: Amazon product listing (Hatteras Deluxe DuraCord) and hatterashammocks.com, 2026. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.
What it does well
- 60 in of width is five inches more than the Large, and width is what lets a tall person angle across the bed
- DuraCord is the synthetic rope, so this one can stay outside through a season
- Dimensions and capacity are both published, which is rarer in this category than it should be
Where it falls short
- Spreader bars mean the bed stays flat and shallow — it is tippier than a gathered-end hammock
- 13 ft plus hardware needs a 15 ft stand or a genuinely wide tree span

4. Best rope chair
Sunnydaze Caribbean XL Hanging Hammock Chair
The open-weave rope chair that ends up on every porch — soft-spun polyester rather than cotton, so it handles weather better than it looks like it should.

- Polyester rope outlasts cotton rope outdoors
- Light enough at 7 lb to move between a stand and a tree
Where it falls short
- Open rope leaves marks on bare skin
- 300 lb is mid-pack for the category

Cotton or synthetic, under a roof
On an open lawn this is not a debate — synthetic wins, because cotton absorbs water, stretches when wet and can mildew. Under a roof the calculus shifts. A covered porch keeps the hammock dry in ordinary rain and shaded from the worst of the sun, and cotton rope is softer against bare skin and breathes better in heat than any synthetic rope we have found specifications for. That is why the cotton Pawleys Island Original Deluxe leads this page and not the leave-outside roundup.
Pick synthetic anyway if your porch is screened but not fully sheltered, if it faces into driven rain, or if the hammock will simply live out there all year unattended. Pawleys sells the same hammock in DURACORD, which it describes as built to withstand sun and rain, and Hatteras publishes DuraCord as the densest rope on the hammock market at 85 ft per lb. Either removes the mildew question without changing the shape of the thing.
Hanging from a porch beam
The hardware rule is short: hang from structure, not from sheathing. Find the beam or the ceiling joist, drill into its center, and use a screw-eye or swing hook rated for the load with enough thread buried in solid wood. Porch ceilings are frequently beadboard over a cavity, and beadboard holds nothing. The detailed version — locating joists, choosing lag sizes, and why a thin nailer is not an anchor — is on how to hang a hammock indoors, which applies unchanged to a covered porch.
Height is the other half. The usual target is a seat sitting around 16 to 19 in off the floor once you are in it, because that is low enough to get in and out of easily and low enough that a failure is uneventful. With fixed porch anchors you cannot change the span, so the sag is set by the chain length you choose — which is exactly what the extension chains on the Pawleys hammocks are for. Use the hanging distance and angle guide to work backward from the anchors you have.
The two-person swing, which is not a hammock but belongs here
The question people actually ask about a front porch is often not which hammock, but what two of us can sit on and talk. That is a swing bench, and the Sorbus macrame bench is the one we point at: roughly 54.5 in long, published at 450 lb, and knotted cotton rather than a slab of wood. It needs a beam, because no chair stand on this site takes a 54 in bench. Compare the formats on hammock vs swing.
Common questions
What size hammock fits a porch?
Measure post to post first. A 13 ft spreader-bar hammock such as the Pawleys Island Original Deluxe wants roughly 15 ft once its extension chains are on. If your span is shorter than that, a hanging chair or a swing bench needs one anchor and about 4 ft of clearance instead.
Can you use a cotton hammock on a porch?
On a covered porch, yes — the roof is what makes it reasonable. Cotton absorbs water, stretches when wet and can mildew, so it needs to stay sheltered. On a screened porch exposed to driven rain, choose a synthetic rope such as DURACORD or DuraCord instead.
How do you hang a hammock from a porch ceiling?
Into the beam or ceiling joist, never into beadboard or sheathing. Locate the structural member, drill at its center and use a screw-eye or swing hook rated for the load with the thread fully buried in solid timber.
How high should a porch hammock hang?
Aim for the loaded seat sitting roughly 16 to 19 in off the floor. With fixed anchors you set that with chain length rather than by moving the anchors, which is what the extension chains supplied with rope hammocks are for.
What is the best hammock chair for a porch?
The Sunnydaze Caribbean XL if you want airflow — open polyester rope, published at 300 lb with a 40 in seat and only 7 lb of chair. The LA SIESTA Domingo is the pick if the chair will be rained on, because LA SIESTA positions its polypropylene fiber as mold-, mildew- and ultraviolet-resistant.
