A spreader-bar hammock needs a stand at least as long as the hammock's overall length including chains — a 13-foot hammock does not fit a 9-foot stand. A gathered-end hammock is more forgiving on length but needs enough hanging height to keep the bed off the ground.

Spreader-bar hammocks: length is a hard limit
A spreader bar holds the bed open at a fixed width, and the hammock's suspension is cut for that geometry. There is no way to compress a spreader-bar hammock to fit a shorter stand. If the numbers do not match, the hammock will either drag on the ground or will not attach at all.
This is why 9-foot stands are both the most commonly sold and the most commonly regretted: they exclude every 12- and 13-foot hammock, which is most of the rope and quilted market. See spreader bar hammocks.
Gathered-end hammocks: height is the limit
A gathered-end hammock hangs in a curve, and the bed drops well below the line between its two ends. So the constraint is not the stand's length but the height of its hanging points. A low-arc stand designed for quilted hammocks will often put a Mayan or camping hammock on the ground.
A Mayan weave is the extreme case, because the lattice stretches under load and drops further than a fabric hammock would. Plan extra height, or buy a hammock-and-stand set matched at the factory.
Footprint, not just length
- Length plus a foot at each end for walking around it. A 9-foot stand wants about 10 feet of clear ground.
- Width at the base is typically three to four feet on an arc stand. Measure where the feet will sit.
- Flat and firm. A stand on soft lawn sinks at the loaded end; a stand on a slope rocks. See uneven ground.
- Swing room. A hammock moves sideways. Leave clearance to both sides.
Adjustable stands
Adjustable frames cover a range rather than a single length, which is the sensible purchase if you might change hammocks. Common questions
Are all hammock stands the same size?
No. The common retail lengths are 9, 12 and 15 feet, plus adjustable frames covering a range. A hammock fits only a stand whose working length meets or exceeds the hammock's overall length including chains.
How long should a hammock stand be?
At least as long as your hammock's overall length including chains, for a spreader-bar hammock. For a gathered-end hammock, prioritize hanging height over length — the bed drops well below the line between the ends.
Will a 13-foot hammock fit a 9-foot stand?
No. A spreader-bar hammock cannot be compressed, so 13 feet of hammock will not fit 9 feet of frame. This is the most common sizing mistake in the category.
How much space do I need for a hammock stand?
The stand's length plus roughly a foot at each end, and three to four feet of width at the base. A 9-foot stand wants about 10 feet of clear flat ground.
Does a Mayan hammock need a bigger stand?
It needs a taller one. The diamond weave stretches under load and the bed drops further than a fabric hammock's would, so low hanging points will put you on the ground.
