Ask four questions in order: how long is the hammock including chains, how much weight with margin, is the ground flat, and does the stand need to move? Length eliminates most options before any other consideration matters.

Question 1: how long is the hammock?
Measure the hammock as it hangs, including extension chains and hardware — not the bed. For a spreader-bar hammock, the stand's working length must meet or exceed that figure, full stop. For a gathered-end hammock, check the hanging height instead, because the bed drops well below the line between the ends.

Question 3: is the ground flat?
A fixed-leg frame on a slope rocks, and that rocking becomes a twisting load every time you move. If your ground is uneven, gravelled or sloping, buy a stand with independently adjustable legs rather than planning to shim it. See best hammock stand for uneven ground.
Question 4: does it need to move?
- Staying put in a garden → a fixed steel arc. Best capacity per dollar, most stable, least fuss.
- Moving around a property → a portable frame, accepting a lower rating.

Material, briefly
Powder-coated and stainless steel resist rust and humidity well and carry the highest published capacities. Timber looks better in a planted garden and needs annual sealing and winter storage, and none of the wooden stands we track publishes a capacity at all. What we would ignore
Color options, decorative finials, integrated cup holders and canopy attachments. None of them affects whether the stand fits your hammock, holds your weight or survives the winter, which are the only four things that matter here.

Common questions
How do I know what size hammock stand I need?
Measure your hammock's overall length including chains. For a spreader-bar hammock, the stand's working length must meet or exceed that. For a gathered-end hammock, prioritize hanging height instead — see the stand size guide.
What capacity hammock stand do I need?
At least your total load with margin for dynamic force. One adult is served by 400 to 450 lb; two adults want 450 lb minimum and 600 lb comfortably. Portable stands go as low as 300 lb.
Steel or wood?

Do I need an adjustable stand?
