The capacity gap is the real story

What wood actually asks of you
- Seal it before first use, including the cut ends, which is where water gets in.
- Re-seal annually, or when water stops beading on the surface.
- Keep the feet off wet ground — timber wicks moisture upward and rots from the bottom.
- Store it dry over winter if you have the space.
- Re-tighten the bolts each season, because timber moves with humidity.
Steel asks for one thing: check the joints and feet each spring and touch up any chips before rust gets under the coating. That is a ten-minute job against an afternoon.
When wood is the right answer
When the stand sits in a planted garden where it will be looked at as much as used, when it pairs with a cotton rope hammock on a covered porch, and when you are the kind of person who actually does annual maintenance on outdoor timber.
