The Best Hammocks for Beginners
The first hammock purchase goes wrong for one reason: the hammock arrives and the thing it hangs from does not. Every pick here is sorted by how much of the setup is already in the box.

For a first hammock, buy a set. The Vivere Double Cotton with its 9 ft steel stand publishes 450 lb, assembles in about 15 minutes with no tools, and leaves nothing else to buy — which is why it is the pick. If you have two trees and want to carry the hammock, the ENO DoubleNest publishes 400 lb at 19 oz, but budget for straps separately.
Part of our hammocks hub. We wrote this page because the most common first-hammock mistake has nothing to do with choosing a bad hammock. It is buying a perfectly good one and discovering it is useless on arrival, because a hammock is one of three parts: the bed, something to hang it from, and something to hang it with. Experienced buyers know which of the three they are short of. First-time buyers usually find out on a Saturday afternoon with a box open on the lawn.
So this list is not ordered by how nice the hammocks are. It is ordered by how complete they are.

The three questions that decide your first hammock
- What are you hanging it from? Two trees 12 to 17 ft apart, a stand, or nothing yet. If the answer is nothing yet, you are buying a set, and that is the easy version of this decision.
- Will it live outside? Cotton is the nicest surface in the category and the worst at weather. Polyester and synthetic rope survive a season out; cotton does not. Our can you leave a hammock outside guide goes material by material.
- One person or two? Published capacities on this page run from 400 lb to 550 lb, and a two-person bed is the single biggest comfort upgrade for one person, because it gives you a diagonal to lie along.
What a beginner should actually look for
- A published capacity, and the lower of the two in a set. In a hammock-and-stand pair the frame is nearly always the limit. An Algoma set published at 275 lb carries a 500 lb hammock, and 275 lb is the number that applies — the whole subject of hammock weight limits.
- Straps in the box, or a line in the budget for them. Wise Owl includes 9 ft straps with its hammocks. ENO does not. Neither approach is wrong, but one of them is a second purchase — see do hammocks come with straps.
- Stand length against hammock length. A 9 ft stand takes a 9 ft hammock, not a 13 ft rope hammock with its chains on. The hammock stand size guide has the table.
- Tool-free assembly, for a first set. Vivere publishes about 15 minutes with no tools. That matters more on day one than any fabric spec.
- Width before length. A 76 in bed lets a single person lie diagonally, which is what makes a hammock comfortable rather than a banana. Length mostly follows your height.
The published numbers, side by side
| Pick | Published capacity | What is in the box | Still to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vivere Double Cotton set | 450 lb | Cotton bed, 9 ft zinc-coated steel stand, carry bag; about 15 min, no tools | Nothing |
| Amazon Basics Double set | 450 lb | Double bed and a 9 ft steel stand | Nothing |
| Wise Owl DoubleOwl | 500 lb | 10 ft x 6 ft 6 in bed, two carabiners, a set of 9 ft straps, stuff sack | Two trees, or a stand |
| ENO DoubleNest | 400 lb | 114 x 76 in bed, 19 oz, carabiners | Straps, and two trees or a stand |
| Pawleys Island Original Deluxe | 450 lb | 13 ft cotton rope bed, extension chains and tree hooks | A 15 ft stand, or a wide tree span |
| Sunnydaze Universal stand | 550 lb | Powder-coated steel frame, universal hanging span | A hammock |
| Kammok Python 10 straps | 500 lb combined | 10 ft 2.5 in pair, 8.2 oz, 20 attachment points | A hammock |
Read the last column first. The two sets need nothing, the two gathered-end hammocks need anchors, and the rope hammock needs a frame most people do not own — a 13 ft bed with its chains on wants a 15 ft stand, not the 9 ft one that comes with a budget set. That single row is the most common first-hammock disappointment in the whole category, and it is a measuring mistake rather than a product fault.

Route one: buy a set, and stop thinking about it
If you do not already own two trees at the right spacing, a set is the correct answer and not a compromise. One box arrives, it publishes one capacity figure covering both halves, and there is no compatibility question to get wrong. The Vivere is the one we point people at because Bob Vila named it the best bang for the buck in 2026 and CNN Underscored made it an overall pick, the frame is zinc-coated rather than bare steel, and 15 minutes of tool-free assembly is a genuinely different first afternoon from a bag of bolts.
The Amazon Basics set is the floor of the category, and 450 lb on a budget set is uncommon enough to be worth noting — many cheap sets publish 275 lb. You are buying basic hardware and a basic finish. For a first hammock that will live on a lawn and come in for winter, that is a reasonable trade. Our fuller best hammocks with stands roundup covers the market end to end, and best hammocks under $100 is the page if budget is the binding constraint.
One caution on both sets: the bed is cotton. Cotton is the softest thing you can lie in and it absorbs water, stretches wet and can mildew. A set is not a leave-outside product unless you buy a synthetic bed for it, which is what hammocks you can leave outside is for.
Route two: you have trees, so buy a bed and a suspension
If you have two healthy trees 12 to 17 ft apart, skip the stand entirely. You need a gathered-end hammock and a pair of tree straps, and the straps are not optional — bare rope or webbing narrower than an inch cuts into bark, which is the point of are hammocks bad for trees.
This is where the two brands diverge in a way that matters to a beginner. The Wise Owl DoubleOwl publishes 500 lb on a 10 ft by 6 ft 6 in bed and includes a set of 9 ft straps and two carabiners, so it hangs the day it arrives. The ENO DoubleNest publishes 400 lb at 19 oz on a 114 by 76 in bed, is the hammock OutdoorGearLab names best all-around, and ships without straps. If you want the whole decision in one page, ENO vs Wise Owl is that comparison, and our new Wise Owl hammock review goes through their line model by model.
If you do buy straps separately, buy length. The Kammok Python 10 publishes 500 lb combined, 10 ft 2.5 in and 20 attachment points in the 2026 99Boulders test, and the extra reach is the difference between hanging where you want to and hanging where the trees allow. Best hammock straps compares the category properly.
Route three: you want the classic rope hammock
Plenty of people picture a rope hammock when they picture a hammock, and the Pawleys Island Original Deluxe is the reference example: 13 ft long, a 55 in cotton bed, 450 lb, handmade in the USA, with extension chains and tree hooks included. It is a lovely object. It is also the hardest first hammock to get right, for two reasons.
- It needs real span. Thirteen feet plus chains wants a 15 ft stand or a genuinely wide tree gap. A 9 ft set frame will not take it.
- It is a spreader-bar hammock, which means a flat, shallow bed that is tippier than a gathered-end hammock. Worth knowing before your first attempt rather than during it — see how to keep a hammock from flipping and spreader bar vs gathered end.
If the look is what you are after and the weather is a worry, the synthetic-rope version of the same hammock is the better first buy, because Pawleys Island builds DURACORD specifically to take sun and rain where cotton cannot. Rope hammocks covers the whole style.
Getting the first hang right
Three numbers cover almost everything a beginner needs. Hang each end at roughly a 30-degree line rather than pulling the hammock tight — the Omni Calculator hang model is built on that figure and so is our hanging distance and angle table. Leave the lowest point of the loaded bed about 18 in off the ground. And lie diagonally across the bed rather than down the middle, which is the single trick that turns a hammock from a banana into a bed.
Then stop buying things. A first-time buyer does not need an underquilt, a ridgeline or a tarp for an afternoon in the yard; those are camping purchases, and hammock camping for beginners is where that list lives.
What we would not start with
- An ultralight camping hammock. A 5.8 oz, 30D hammock is a brilliant third purchase and a thin, unforgiving first one.
- A 275 lb set. Published capacity that low rules out two adults, and two adults is the most common second use of a first hammock.
- A bare hammock with no plan for anchors. This is the mistake the whole page is about.
- A cotton hammock that has to live outdoors. It will mildew, and the stain does not come out — SUNCREAT says the same thing in its own leave-it-outside guidance.
Common questions
What is the best hammock for a beginner?
A complete set, because it removes the compatibility question entirely. The Vivere Double Cotton with its 9 ft steel stand publishes 450 lb, assembles in about 15 minutes with no tools and needs nothing else. If you already have two trees 12 to 17 ft apart, a gathered-end hammock plus tree straps is cheaper and lighter.
Do I need a stand for my first hammock?
Only if you do not have two healthy trees roughly 12 to 17 ft apart. With trees, a pair of inch-wide tree straps is all you need and is far cheaper than a frame. Without them, a stand is the purchase, and a set gets you both halves rated together.
Do beginner hammocks come with straps?
It depends on the brand, and this is the most common surprise in the category. Wise Owl includes a set of 9 ft straps and two carabiners with its hammocks. ENO sells straps separately. Complete sets include a stand instead, so no straps are needed at all.
Should a first hammock be single or double?
Double. A two-person bed is the biggest comfort upgrade available to one person, because the extra width gives you a diagonal to lie along instead of a narrow curve. The ENO DoubleNest publishes 76 in of width and the Wise Owl DoubleOwl 6 ft 6 in.
How much should a first hammock cost?
We do not publish price figures in prose, because they move — every buy button here shows the current Amazon price through our price feed. In bracket terms, a budget complete set is the cheapest honest entry point, a mid-bracket set buys a better frame and finish, and a bare camping hammock plus straps lands between the two once you count both parts.
