If they have no hammock and no stand, buy a complete set — it is the only gift that works out of the box. If they already have a hammock, buy straps, a pillow or a tarp instead, because a second hammock they cannot hang is not a gift.

The two things to check before you order
- Do they have somewhere to hang it? Two trees 12 to 17 feet apart, or somewhere flat for a stand. If you cannot answer this, buy a set with a stand included — it removes the question.
- Do they already own a hammock? If yes, buy accessories rather than a second hammock. Straps, a pillow, a tarp or an underquilt all get used immediately.

What is not in the box
This is the part gift buyers most often miss. A standalone hammock frequently arrives with no way to hang it. Some include chains and hooks — the Pawleys Island Original Deluxe ships with extension chains and tree hooks — and plenty do not.
- Straps, if they are using trees. At least an inch wide, or they will damage the bark.
- A stand, if they have no trees. And it must be long enough — a 13-foot hammock does not fit a 9-foot stand.
- A tarp and a bug net, if it is for camping.
- Insulation underneath, if they will sleep in it in anything but warm weather.

Is a hammock a good gift?
Yes, provided the recipient has somewhere to hang it. If you are not sure they do, buy a complete hammock-and-stand set — it arrives matched and needs nothing else.
What should I buy for someone who already has a hammock?
Accessories. Straps, a tarp, a pillow that stays put, or an underquilt. These are the things regular hammock users actually upgrade, and none of them depends on knowing which hammock they own — except the underquilt, which should be matched to their season.
What size hammock should I buy as a gift?
A double is the safe choice. It is more comfortable for one person because it allows a diagonal lie, and it also fits two. Check the recipient's available span before buying anything longer than 12 feet.
Do hammocks come with everything needed to hang them?
Not always. Some include chains and hooks; many include nothing. If they are hanging from trees they will need straps, and if they have no trees they will need a stand of the right length.
