Read the last column before the first. Under this cap, what separates the options is usually what comes in the box rather than the hammock itself. An ENO plus a set of straps is two purchases; a Wise Owl is one. A Skeeter Beeter Pro brings a sewn-in bug net that would otherwise be a separate item, and Grand Trunk states that tree straps are not included with it.

What the cap actually costs you
- Insulation. Nothing here comes with an underquilt, and a quilt costs more than most of these hammocks. See the best cheap underquilts.
- A tarp. A rain fly is a separate purchase on every model here except an all-in-one shelter.
- Length. The long 11 ft bodies that tall sleepers want mostly sit above the cap. Hammocks for tall people has the published lengths.
- A flat lay. Bridge hammocks and flat-lay shelters are all above the cap without exception.
- A stand. A hammock stand costs several times what these hammocks do, which is why hammock and stand sets are a different page entirely.
Straps are the purchase people forget
An ENO arrives with carabiners and no suspension. Buying the hammock and discovering you cannot hang it is the most common first-week complaint in this category, and the fix is cheap. Wide webbing straps are also what keeps you welcome at parks that require them — thin rope cuts into bark. Backyard or backpacking
Everything on this page is gathered-end nylon, which is the format that gets you the most hammock for the least money, and it packs to nothing. What it is not is a traditional backyard hammock. If you want a quilted bed or a cotton rope hammock on a stand, the cap changes the conversation and you should start at backyard hammocks instead — a rope or quilted hammock plus a stand is a different order of purchase.

Are cheap hammocks safe?
Gathered-end nylon hammocks under this cap publish 300 lb to 500 lb capacities, and those figures are reasonable for the fabric. The weak point is almost always the suspension or the anchor rather than the hammock, so spend on straps and check what you hang from.
Do hammocks under $100 come with straps?
Some do and some do not, and it is the single most useful thing to check. Wise Owl includes straps and carabiners; ENO ships carabiners and sells its straps separately; Grand Trunk states that the Skeeter Beeter Pro includes suspension cord but not tree straps.
Can you camp with a hammock under $100?
Yes — the hammock is the cheap part. A complete camping setup also needs straps, a tarp, a bug net and under-insulation, and those four together cost more than the hammock. Hammock camping for beginners lists them in the order to buy them.
Is a double hammock worth it over a single?
For one person, usually yes. The extra width is what lets you lie diagonally, which is how a hammock becomes flat enough to sleep in. Two adults in one hammock is a different matter — see ENO DoubleNest vs SingleNest.
