Hammock vs Hammock Chair

One needs two anchors and a long straight line. The other needs one anchor and a tall ceiling. Almost every space clearly suits one and not the other.

LA SIESTA Habana Comfort Organic Cotton Hammock Chair

Choose by the space, not the product. A hammock needs two anchors roughly 13 to 15 ft apart, lies down, and publishes capacities around 450 lb. A hammock chair needs one anchor and real height — LA SIESTA specifies a 6 ft 11 in minimum hanging height for the Habana Comfort — sits up, and publishes lower capacities, commonly 285 to 300 lb.

Part of our comparisons hub. This is the most practical either-or on the site, because the two formats are not really competing on comfort. They are competing on geometry: the hammock wants length and the chair wants height. Work out which of those your porch, room or balcony actually has and the decision makes itself. For the other seat-versus-seat question, see hammock chair vs egg chair.

The hammock case

You lie down, which is the entire point. The published capacities are higher — 450 lb on the Pawleys Island Original Deluxe and on the Vivere double cotton set — and two people fit, which no single chair allows. A spreader-bar rope hammock is also the most comfortable thing on this site in genuine heat, because an open rope weave moves air through the bed in a way no fabric seat does.

The cost is linear space. Thirteen feet of bed plus extension chains wants a 15 ft stand or a genuinely wide tree span, and that is a backyard-sized requirement. If you are shopping because a room or a balcony is small, the hammock is probably not the answer — read best hammocks for an apartment balcony for the version of this page that assumes you have no span at all.

The chair case

A chair turns a hammock into furniture. One anchor, a footprint you can put in a corner, and you can read, work or talk to someone without lying down to do it. LA SIESTA publishes the full set of dimensions on the Habana Comfort — seating width 3 ft 9 in, seating length 5 ft 11 in, total height 5 ft 3 in, spreader bar 3 ft 7 in, and a required minimum hanging height of 6 ft 11 in — which is unusual and genuinely useful, because the height figure is the one that decides whether it fits.

The costs are capacity and height. 285 lb is lower than any full-length hammock here, and a stand adds its own ceiling: the Sunnydaze steel C-stand publishes 300 lb, so in that pairing the stand is the limiting part. Sitting up also means your weight lands on a smaller area of fabric, which some people find less comfortable over a long afternoon than a flat bed. The full chair roundup is best hammock chairs.

How to decide in one minute

  1. Measure the longest straight line you have, at floor level. Fifteen feet or more, between two things you can anchor to or room for a frame: a hammock is on the table.
  2. Measure the height of the hardest point you could hang from. Seven feet or more: a chair is on the table.
  3. If both pass, choose by posture. Do you want to nap, or to sit and read?
  4. If neither passes, buy a chair and a C-stand. It is the only format on this site that brings its own geometry and still fits in a corner.

Common questions

Is a hammock or a hammock chair better?

Whichever fits your space. A hammock needs two anchors 13 to 15 ft apart and lies down at around 450 lb; a chair needs one anchor and about 7 ft of height, sits up, and publishes lower capacities — 285 lb for the LA SIESTA Habana Comfort.

How much ceiling height does a hammock chair need?

LA SIESTA publishes a required minimum hanging height of 6 ft 11 in for the Habana Comfort. Treat that as representative of the category and measure before you buy.

Are hammock chairs less strong than hammocks?

Generally the published figures are lower. Full-length hammocks here commonly publish 450 lb; the chairs cluster around 285 to 300 lb, and the chair stand is often the lowest number in the pair.

Can a hammock chair hang on a hammock stand?

No. The geometry is different — a hammock stand spreads the load across a long span and a chair stand carries a single point overhead. Use a chair stand, covered on best hammock chair stands.

Which is more comfortable for an afternoon?

A hammock, if you intend to lie down, because the load spreads over your whole body. A chair is better if you want to be upright, and the swivel on a chair such as the Habana means the cords never wind up on themselves.
