The Best Camping Hammocks for Beginners

A first camping hammock should be forgiving, widely compatible, and complete enough that your first night out does not turn into a shopping list.

ENO DoubleNest Hammock

The ENO DoubleNest is the first camping hammock to buy. It is 400 lb, 114 x 76 in, 19 oz, and OutdoorGearLab ranks it the best all-around hammock — but the real argument is compatibility: underquilts, tarps and straps across the market are built to fit it. Straps are sold separately, so add ENO Atlas. If you want everything in one box, the Wise Owl DoubleOwl ships with 9 ft straps and carabiners.

Part of our camping hammocks hub. The mistake first-timers make is not buying a bad hammock — the category is mostly fine — it is buying an unusual one. A hammock nothing else fits turns every later purchase into a research project, and the second purchase is always insulation. So the beginner criterion on this page is boring on purpose: pick something the rest of the market is designed around. If you want the method rather than the products, start with hammock camping for beginners.

What each maker publishes as included. This is the single most useful comparison for a first purchase, and the one listings bury hardest.

The column that surprises people is the straps column. A camping hammock is commonly sold as a bed and nothing else, and arriving at a campsite with a hammock and no suspension is the classic first-trip failure. Two of the six picks here include straps; the rest do not, and the listing will not shout about it.

1. Best all-around camping hammock

ENO DoubleNest Hammock

The most widely sold camping hammock there is, and OutdoorGearLab's best all-around pick.

  • 70D high-tenacity nylon taffeta
  • Ranked best all-around hammock by OutdoorGearLab and best two-person by Treeline Review

Source: Treeline Review 2026 spec table, OutdoorGearLab 2026 and REI. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.

What it does well

Where it falls short

  • Straps are sold separately
  • Plain nylon with none of the comfort upgrades of the cottage brands

2. Straps included, higher rating

Wise Owl Outfitters DoubleOwl Hammock

500 lb, a wider bed than the DoubleNest and 9-foot straps in the box — the value answer to ENO, and it arrives ready to hang.

Specifications

  • 500 lb capacity
  • 10 ft long x 6 ft 6 in wide
  • 26 oz
  • Packs to 8 in tall x 5 in diameter
  • 210T parachute nylon
  • Includes two D-shaped carabiners, a set of 9 ft straps and a stuff sack

Source: wiseowloutfitters.com DoubleOwl product page, 2026. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.

What it does well

  • Straps are included; with an ENO they are a separate purchase
  • 500 lb published, 100 lb above the DoubleNest
  • A 10 ft body is longer than the DoubleNest's 9 ft 6 in

Where it falls short

  • 26 oz for the hammock alone, against 19 oz for a DoubleNest
  • 210T nylon is a heavier, coarser fabric than 70D taffeta

3. A bug net inside the cap

Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro Mosquito Net Hammock

A 400 lb parachute-nylon hammock with the no-see-um netting already sewn on, still listed below the cap at the maker's own store.

  • 35 oz packed weight

  • Netting flips underneath to convert it to a plain single hammock

Source: grandtrunk.com Skeeter Beeter Pro listing and published specifications, 2026. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.

What it does well

  • An integrated net at the money other brands charge for the hammock alone
  • 400 lb is the same figure as an ENO SingleNest, on a longer body
  • Flipping the net underneath means you are not stuck with it on a bug-free night

Where it falls short

  • 35 oz is heavy against a bare ultralight hammock
  • A sewn-in net cannot be left at home to save weight
  • Straps are a separate purchase; only knotted cord is in the box

No licensed photograph of this product is available to us yet.

4. Bug net built in

A 10-foot body with the bug net, ridgeline and gear loft already attached — the ENO that needs the fewest extra purchases.

Source: ENO and retailer product pages for the JungleNest, 2026. We publish specs we can attribute and leave the rest blank rather than assuming a typical value.

What it does well

  • A 10 ft body lies flatter than the DoubleNest's 9 ft 6 in
  • Net, ridgeline and gear loft included — three purchases saved
  • The net stows rather than coming off

Where it falls short

  • 300 lb is 100 lb below the DoubleNest
  • 20 oz and more packed bulk than a plain nylon hammock

Why compatibility beats specifications

The DoubleNest's advantage is not its fabric. It is that ENO publishes underquilt compatibility for it — the Ember UnderQuilt page states it fits all ENO hammocks except the DayLoft and SuperNest — and that nearly every third-party tarp, net and quilt in the category has been cut with a hammock of roughly these dimensions in mind. When your second purchase arrives and simply fits, you have saved yourself the evening the rest of us spent reading forum threads about ridgeline lengths.

Treeline Review names the DoubleNest the best two-person hammock and the SingleNest the best overall; OutdoorGearLab calls the DoubleNest the best all-around. Those are coverage verdicts rather than our own bench work, and they are useful here mainly as confirmation that this is the default the market has settled on.

If bugs are the thing you are worried about

Buy the net built in. The Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter Pro is a 10 ft 6 in by 5 ft hammock at 400 lb with no-see-um netting on a double-sided zipper, and the netting flips underneath to convert it to a plain hammock on nights you do not need it. The ENO JungleNest does the same job lighter at 20 oz, with the net stowing onto a DAC Featherlite spreader bar and a structural ridgeline already fitted — though its published capacity is lower, at 300 lb.

The alternative is a separate net over a plain hammock, which is more flexible and more fiddly. That comparison is laid out on hammocks with a bug net and rainfly and best hammock bug nets.

The three things to buy with it

  1. Straps, if they are not included. ENO Atlas: 400 lb combined, 9 ft long, 9 oz, 15 attachment points. Wide webbing rather than rope, because rope cuts into bark.
  2. A tarp, before your first wet night. Sizing is on what size tarp for hammock camping.
  3. Insulation, before your first cold one. This is the purchase beginners skip and then regret at 3am — see best hammock underquilts.

Common questions

What is the best camping hammock for a beginner?

The ENO DoubleNest — 400 lb, 114 x 76 in, 19 oz, and the hammock most third-party tarps, nets and underquilts are built to fit. Straps are sold separately, so budget for a pair.

Do camping hammocks come with straps?

Often not. The Wise Owl DoubleOwl includes two 9 ft straps and two carabiners; ENO sells straps separately; Grand Trunk explicitly states that tree straps are not included with the Skeeter Beeter Pro. Check before you travel.

Should a first hammock have a built-in bug net?

If you camp anywhere with mosquitoes, it removes a decision and a separate purchase. The Skeeter Beeter Pro's net flips underneath when you do not want it, and the ENO JungleNest stows its net on a spreader bar.

What else do I need for my first hammock trip?

Straps, a tarp and insulation underneath you. The last one is the surprise — a hammock compresses whatever is under your back, so a sleeping bag alone is not enough below about sixty degrees Fahrenheit.

Is a single or a double hammock better to start with?

A double, even for one person. The extra width is what lets you lie diagonally, which is flatter and more comfortable than lying straight along the centerline.
